How to Create the Perfect Fantasy Name
A great fantasy name should feel authentic to its world while being memorable and easy to pronounce.
Tips for Fantasy Naming
- Match the race. Elven names should flow with soft vowels. Dwarven names sound harsh and grounded. Orcish names are guttural and short.
- Consider the setting. Norse-inspired worlds call for different names than Celtic or Eastern settings.
- Keep it pronounceable. If you or your players can't say it, it won't stick.
- Add a surname or title. A last name or epithet adds depth: "Torin Ironforge" says more than just "Torin."
- Think about meaning. Names that hint at the character's personality or destiny are more memorable.
- Avoid real-world associations. Names too close to modern celebrities or brands break immersion.
