How to Choose the Perfect D&D Character Name

Your character's name is the first thing other players hear. A great name sets the tone for roleplay and makes your character memorable at the table.

  • 1.Match race phonetics. Elven names should flow with vowels and soft consonants. Dwarven names should be short and guttural. Tiefling names can sound infernal or use virtue names.
  • 2.Consider your class. A barbarian named "Gentle Petal" can be ironic fun, but "Grukk the Bonecrusher" immediately tells the table what you're about.
  • 3.Add a surname or epithet. "Aldric" is good, but "Aldric Thorne, the Unbroken" gives your DM and party something to work with in roleplay.
  • 4.Keep it pronounceable. If you struggle to say it, your DM will too. Avoid names so complex that no one at the table can remember them.
  • 5.Check the sourcebooks. The Player's Handbook and Xanathar's Guide include name lists by race. Use them as inspiration to stay lore-accurate.
  • 6.Think about nicknames. Long names like "Verthisathurgiesh" are fun but players will shorten them. Plan for the nickname your party will inevitably give you.

What Makes a Great D&D Name

The most iconic D&D character names share these traits.

Racial Identity

A great name instantly tells you the character's race. Elvish names sound different from Dwarven names, which sound different from Orcish names.

Backstory Hints

Names like "Ashford" or "Duskglow" subtly hint at a character's history or homeland without needing a full backstory explanation.

Table-Friendly

The best D&D names are easy to say, spell, and remember during a 4-hour session. Save the complex names for written campaigns.

Roleplay Fuel

A name with character — serious, funny, mysterious, or grand — gives your DM and fellow players something to react to and build on.
