How to Create a Memorable Villain Name
The best villain names communicate threat through phonetics alone — before the character ever does anything.
Dark Phonetics
Hard consonants (K, G, X, Z), back vowels (A, O, U), and voiced obstruents create aggressive, threatening sounds. Malachar feels dangerous; Sparkleberry does not.
Titles Add Weight
"the Undying," "Lord of Shadows," "the Deceiver" — titles give villains mythic gravitas. The best titles hint at the villain's method or domain.
Avoid Cliche
Every villain does not need to be Lord Dark McEvil. The most memorable antagonists have names that feel like they belonged to a person before they became a monster.
Match Archetype to Name
A trickster should sound smooth and inviting. A warlord should sound blunt and brutal. A necromancer should sound hollow and ancient.
